One of the most common conditions found in Indian women, anaemia, can be a tough thing to fight. It makes the number of red blood cells in the body to nosedive dramatically and is a common occurrence among pregnant women, growing children and women who experience excessive bleeding during menstruation. Although iron supplements can be an adequate remedy, there are some natural ways in which you can keep the condition at bay.
Green Leafy Vegetables
Leafy and green vegetables like spinach, fenugreek, coriander and Malabar spinach are not only rich sources of iron, but they also provide the body with folic acid, which is essential during pregnancy. Some people might not find these vegetables lip-smacking but, if you wish to keep anaemia at bay, you may use these in your soup or curries.
Besides being an excellent source of iron, pomegranate is also rich in other minerals like calcium and magnesium. Also, it contains vitamin C which boosts the ability to absorb dietary iron. Thus, the pomegranate is considered to be one of the best natural remedies to treat anaemia. Eating ripe pomegranate seeds is the recommended way to prevent anemia, but alternatively, you could also turn it into a glass of juice and drink it at least a few times every week.
Dates contain dietary fibre and antioxidants and are an excellent source of vitamin B complex, vitamin C and iron. Eat them fresh or add them to any of your recipes and you are good to go.
Found in almost every Indian household, the dark-coloured substitute of sugar is an excellent source of iron, and if you consume it regularly, it can dramatically shoot up your haemoglobin levels. Add it to your tea or coffee or into your breakfast cereal, or you can also put a pinch of powdered jaggery in your dal.
Obtained from the plant Asparagus racemosus, Shatavari has been recommended by Ayurveda experts for treating anaemia. A favourite Ayurvedic drink called Shatavari kalpa can be found in the form of liquid as well as granules that can be mixed with milk and turned into a refreshing drink.
The adage ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ suitably fits for anaemic. Apples are iron-rich; consuming two or three apples a day can cure anaemia sans medications.
Honey is rich in iron, copper and manganese. An anaemic person can benefit from the regular consumption of honey as doing so improves haemoglobin count in the blood curing anaemia.
Anaemia can be cured by eating herbs. Herbs have iron content, thus a good home remedy to treat anaemia. Herbs that anaemic can consume:
Tincture of Yellow dock root: ½ or 1 tsp. thrice in a day or
Extractor root of Dandelion leaf: 1/2 or 1 tsp. or two capsules a day and
Salad prepared with Dandelion greens.
Ripe bananas with honey improve production of haemoglobin in the blood. Thus a suggested a home remedy to cure anaemia.
Seven soaked and peeled almonds a day can remedy anaemia. Soak them overnight and the next morning. Take them empty stomach
