Wellness: Sexual Potency
Ayurveda stresses maintaining the health and vitality of the reproductive system. Ayurveda herbs have unmatched powers of arresting and reversing the aging process, increasing libido , helping impotency and infertility.

Sexual energy can become creative energy and help facilitate mental or spiritual work. However, the hectic pace of ultra modern lifestyle causes severe tension and excessive fatigue within individuals. This is usually the prime cause for lack of libido and unsatisfactory sexual performance. This is not simply to allow for a better sex life. It is to afford greater vitality for the body as a whole and for the nervous system specifically.

Ayurveda offers a number of treatments for a variety of sexual problems.

Causes of ED
Erection requires a sequence of events. Erectile dysfunction can occur when any of the events is disturbed. Nerve impulses in the brain, spinal column, around the penis and response in muscles, fibrous tissues, veins, and arteries in and around the corpora cavernosa constitute this sequence of events. Injury to any of these parts which are part of this sequence ( nerves, arteries, smooth muscles, fibrous tissue ) can cause ED.

Lowered level of testosterone hormone: The primary male hormone is testosterone. After age 40, a man's testosterone level gradually declines. About 5% of men that doctors see for erectile dysfunction have low testosterone levels. In many of these cases, low testosterone causes lower sexual interest, not erectile dysfunction.

The whole male body responds to testosterone. The same response of body

Even sushruta has illustrated about this response of body to the element "Shukra" . He has said

"yatha payasi sarpistu goodashchekshow raso yatha shareereshu tatha shukram nrinaam vidyaadhbishagwara" This means " The shukra ( the element which helps in reproduction) is present all over the body . This can be explained with the following examples.
1. The ghee is present in milk in an invisible form. This is extracted from milk using many processes.
2. The sugar is present all over the sugarcane. It is extracted by subjecting the sugarcane to number of processes.
Same way shukra is present all over the body. But the cream of shukra (semen) comes out of the body only during the process of ejaculation. But this process of ejaculation needs a joyful union of mind and body.

Decrease in production of "Shukra" causes erectile dysfunction.

Over exertion - physically and mentally : Working for long hours in office, mental stress at office and home, short temperedness ,insufficient sleep cause erectile dysfunction.

These causes are explained in ayurveda as "shoka chintaa, bhaya, traasaat .... " which means that erectile dysfunction or Impotence occurs due to grief, fear, anxiety and terror.

Strained relationship with sexual partner: Erectile dysfunction also occurs when there is a disliking towards sexual partner.

Diseases that cause Erectile dysfunction: Neurological disorders, hypothyroidism, Parkinson's disease, anemia, depression, arthritis, endocrine disorders, diabetes, diseases related to cardiovascular system also become reasons for erectile dysfunction..

Consumption of medicines, drugs and tobacco: Using antidepressants, tranquilizers and antihypertensive medicines for a long time, addiction to tobacco especially smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, addiction to cocaine, heroin and marijuana cause erectile dysfunction.

In ayurveda texts these causes have been said in brief as "rukshamannapaanam tathoushadham" - "dry food , drinks and medicines" cause impotence or erectile dysfunction.

Trauma to pelvic region: accidental injury to pelvic region and surgeries for the conditions of prostate, bladder, colon, or rectal area may lead to erectile dysfunction.

These causes are mentioned as abhighata (trauma), shastradantanakhakshataha (injury from weapons, teeth and nail.) in ayurveda. Other Reasons: Obesity, prolonged bicycle riding, past history of sexual abuse and old age also cause Erectile dysfunction.

Remedies for ED
ED is treatable at any age. The total treatment in for impotence is called as " Vajikarana therapy" in ayurveda. As this therapy increases the strength of a man to perform sexual act, like a horse, it is called 'Vaajikarana'. ( ' Vaaji'=Horse.)

Vaajikarana therapy leads to
" Happiness
" Good strength
" Potency to produce offspring
" Increased span of erection

Erectile dysfunction(ED) in HYPERTENSION & DIABETES - 'THE SILENT KILLERS'
In recent times people are aware of the importance of both diseases as herald of complications commonly attributed to old age. Method of management in modern science is suppression of symptoms and forceful reduction of blood pressure or blood sugar. Symptoms and disease manifest immediately On stopping the medicines in a more severe form. But in Ayurveda the cause of hypertension and diabetes are being treated. The abnormal functioning of vata and improper formation of kapha (metabolic dysfunction) which are the prime causatives of hypertension & diabetes respectively are brought to their normal states. A regime congenial to maintain health is also prescribed to prevent their recurrence.

Erectile dysfunction is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for his sexual needs or the needs of his partner. Erectile dysfunction is sometimes called as "impotence".

The term "erectile dysfunction" can mean the inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or the ability to achieve only brief erections.

Men with diabetes usually face erectile dysfunction. About 75% of diabetic men suffer from erectile dysfunction or impotence. The erectile dysfunction develops earlier in diabetic men than non diabetic men.

Erection requires a sequence of events. Erectile dysfunction can occur when any of the events is disturbed. Nerve impulses in the brain, spinal column, around the penis and response in muscles, fibrous tissues, veins and arteries in and around the corpora cavernosa constitute this sequence of events. Injury to any of these parts which are part of this sequence (nerves, arteries, smooth muscles, fibrous tissue) can cause ED.

In ayurveda physiology of erection and ejaculation is described as follows
Vrishunow basthimedram cha naabhyuuru vankshnow gudam|
Apaanasthaanamantrasthaha shukra mootra shakrunti cha||
The "apaanavayu" one of the five types of vayu is located in the testicles, urinary bladder, phallus, umbilicus, thighs, groin, anus and colon. Its functions are ejaculation of semen, voiding of urine and stools".

Shushruta explains the process of erection and ejaculation as " When a man has desire (iccha) to have sex, his response to touch increases ( Vayu located in skin causes flow of signals from skin to brain, thus causing sensation of touch. Generally Vata controls the flow of signals in nervous system.). This causes arousal or "harsha" . Arousal or Harsha intensifies actions of vayu and at this moment highly active vayu liberates the " teja "or heat of pitta. Thus tejas and vayu increase body temperature , heart beat and blood flow causing erection."

Diabetes damages blood vessels and nerves (neuropathy) throughout body. When blood vessels and nerves which control erection, are damaged, they do not communicate properly and the blood flow to penis tissue is impaired. This causes erectile dysfunction.

According to ayurvedic text "ashtanga sangraha", diabetes is caused due to vitiation of vata. pitta, kapha and rakta (blood). Vitiated doshas affect almost all tissues of body in diabetes. According to ayurveda the process of erection occurs due to involvement of vata, pitta and rakta . Vitiated vata fails to cause normal flow of signals and arousal does not occur. Vitiated pitta and rakta fail to complete the process of blood flow to penis.

The process of erection will be normal when vata, pitta and rakta are in normal and balanced condition.

Simple remedies to avoid erectile dysfunction in diabetes:
  1. Mix a pinch of turmeric with juice of embelica officinalis (Amla) and consume this in early morning.
  2. Drink triphala concoction daily in early morning.
  3. Juices of neem, guduchi (giloya) and Embelica officinalis prove beneficial if consumed in early morning.
  4. Obese patients have to exercise regularly and aim at reducing weight.
  5. Practice yoga and meditation regularly to keep stress level low.
  6. Look for lavanya's ras-rasayan treatment and punchkarma for getting cured at the gross route level.

Q. Is masturbation harmful?
No, masturbation is not harmful in as much as producing physical disability or diminishing your virility. In fact masturbation should be seen as 'a handful of pleasure'. It doesn't lead to any deformity of the penis nor does it affect the ability to achieve or sustain an erection.

Q. What's the average size of the penis?
The average size of penis is 15 cm, the normal range is considered to be between 13 cm and 18 cm.

Q. Can penis size be increased?
Yes. There are two procedure i.e. medicinal & surgical procedures to increase penis size.

For Medicinal Procedure
Ayurvedic Supplements - KING COBRA capsules for three months course

Surgical procedures are two i.e. Biharin Procedure, and Fat Injection.

The Biharin Procedure consists of cutting the ligament that secures the base of the penis to the body. This gives between one-half and two inches of increased length to the penis; however, because the penis is no longer anchored to the body an erection no longer points 'up.'

Fat Injection is the process of removing fat from the backs of the thighs and injecting it into the body of the penis to make the penis thicker. Because the body rejects a significant portion of the injection this procedure may need to be repeated several times and each operation carries with it a severe risk of infection.

Q. My penis bends down (or left, or right). Is there something wrong with it?
One-quarter of all penises bend in some direction and some bend downward even when erect. Coming to think of it, one would really thank the Searchd that the penis doesn't have any bones in it, and therefore it can normally easily bend in many directions to perform its job without much of discomfort. Unless the bend is severe or causes you pain, there is nothing wrong or abnormal about your penis. It should not interfere with sexual intercourse. In fact some people find the bend is to their advantage, making penetration easier.

Q. One of my testicles is larger than the other. Is it all right?
Rarely are both the testicles identical. In fact the left one hangs lower in 85% of cases. It is nothing to worry about.

Q. Sometimes I feel pain in my testicles. Is there some thing to worry?
Intermittent twinges in the testicles are common and these sometimes happen after the intercourse. If it lasts less than a minute then there is nothing to worry. An infection or inflammation causes testicular pain that builds up gradually. In such cases consult your doctor.

Q. Ejaculation happens too fast. What do I do?
Again, it is one of the more frequent problems. The solution is to try to strengthen your PC (pubococcygeus) muscle. It is the muscle that you use to stop urine flow or to rid yourself of the last few drops. Try contracting it whenever you get reminded of it - in the car, at your desk, some 50 - 100 times a day. It is the same muscle that contracts for ejaculation, therefore strengthening it will give you more control during sex.

Q. Does Sex Hurt the First Time?
The first time a woman has sex, it may or may not be painful. There may be psychological and physical reasons for it. If you are not sure about your partner or if you are not entirely convinced about the timing and place, then you may feel more pain than you should. If you and your partner truly care for one another and he is gentle and understanding and will go slowly, then there may be less discomfort.

Physically, often, the first time a woman has sex there will be some bleeding as the hymen is torn. Using large amounts of a water-based lubricant may help. If you have been using tampons, that may have helped to stretch your hymen.

Q. What is the G-Spot?
There is a lot of talk regarding the most erotic zones for a woman. The Grafenberg spot, or G-spot, is considered to be one such area. This is an area located within the front wall of the vagina, about one centimetre from the surface and one-third to one-half way in from the vaginal opening.

The significance of the G-spot is that in about half the women it is a highly sensitive area that under the right conditions can be very pleasurable if stimulated. For some women, it can be a primary source of stimulation leading to orgasm during intercourse.

It is believed that stimulation of the G-Spot can lead to what is known as female ejaculation.

Q. Is it O.K. to have Sex during a Period?
Sex during periods is a strong taboo in many cultures but there is no scientific basis for it .For the average, mutually monogamous couple with no sexually transmitted disease, there is no medical reason to avoid sex during menses. In fact many women feel increased sexual arousal during the periods.

Q. I feel pain during sex. What could be the reason?
There may be a host of reasons for painful intercourse. Pain on initial penetration is often due to infection, spasm of the vaginal muscles or inadequate lubrication. Pain on deeper thrusting may be caused by endometriosis, adhesions (scar tissue), a retroverted (backward-tilting) uterus or fibroids. Pain in only one particular position may simply mean that in that position, your partner is pushing against your cervix.

Persistent pain in all the positions should prompt a visit to your gynecologist for a thorough checkup.

Q. I suffer bleeding after Intercourse. Is it cause to worry?
Bleeding after intercourse (post-coital bleeding in doctor talk) can occur for several reasons. Infection is one of the most common reasons. Abnormal cervical cells, including cancer, are also more easily irritated and may bleed with intercourse. Women who use an IUD or diaphragm may experience such bleeding from irritation and friction. Sometimes the bleeding is not from the cervix, but rather from a tear in the vagina; tears can happen with vigorous sex or if you are dry.
